Originally from the Navajo Reservation in Northeastern Arizona, Brian graduated from Fort Lewis College in 2002 with a baccalaureate degree in Southwest Studies.
Brian was hired as an academic advisor for the FLC Upward Bound program in 2004. Upward Bound is a federal college preparatory program for low-income and potential first-generation college bound high school students. It was through Upward Bound, that Brian found his passion working with teenagers. He has molded the program into a “rite of passage” for young people. Today, the program includes a high degree of outdoor activities that include rock climbing, river rafting, hiking and camping along with academic studies. Upward Bound classes and projects are held outdoors and are closely tied to careers and fields of study. On the average, 80% of Fort Lewis College Upward Bound participants go to college and 35% graduate from college within a six-year span.
Brian came from a low-income community on the Navajo Reservation in Northeastern Arizona. He is the first in his family to complete college. His mother is from the Coyote Pass Clan and his father is from the Bear Clan. His maternal grandfathers are of the Towering House Clan and his paternal grandfathers are of the One Who Walks Around Clan. Brian is the current Director of the Fort Lewis College Upward Bound program.
