Founder and Director of Learn Outdoors Inc., Michael Ackerman is a certified mountain guide, professional educator and freelance photojournalist. With a self-designed degree in Eco-centered Adventure Based Education from Prescott College, Michael has employed his unique approach to experiential education in both classroom and field settings. Michael has worked as a high school administrator, department head, Civics, US History, Language Arts and Physical Education teacher in both public and private settings. Michael is the founder of the public school, Tributaries Alternative Education Program in Conway, NH, and together with a small group of talented educators helped found the private, alternative boarding school, the Oliverian School in Pike, NH. Michael began his work as an educator over thirteen years ago and has worked with all ages, populations and demographics. Participants are drawn to his amazing leadership style which blends humor and dynamic storytelling to empower his groups to amazing heights. When he’s not leading Learn Outdoors, Michael’s passion for snowboarding has taken him across North America’s mountains as a professional ski patroller, avalanche educator, sponsored backcountry rider and off-piste guide. Michael spends his winters guiding backcountry snowboarding and teaching avalanche courses in Colorado and his adventure writing and photography has appeared in publications nationwide. Currently Michael has been selected from a national field of high powered candidates to be head of the Animas High School in Durango,CO.
