Curriculum Overview

The Four Rivers Institute's curriculum is designed to empower young native leaders with professional adventure training and to inspire them to utilize these skills to create positive change in their own communities.  

Personal Living Skills: The Four Rivers Institute provides students with a year long residential curriculum that fosters personal growth through simple living including:

  • Yurt style dormitories
  • Planning and preparation of food
  • Provide daily campus maintenance and upkeep
  • Rigorous exercise


Professional Skills: Through partnerships with nationally recognized organizations, the Four Rivers Institute has consolidated these adventure guide certifications into one student certification program.

  • Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician cert.
  • American Mountain Guides Association certification in mountaineering and rock climbing
  • SARS (search and rescue) certification
  • Technical Ropes Rescue Certification
  • Professional Whitewater Guide certification
  • Swiftwater rescue technician certification
  • Wilderness Navigation Certification
  • Wildlands Survival Certification
  • Ropes course Technician Certification
  • Avalanche technician Certification
  • Master of leave no trace Certification
  • Universal Tracking Certification
  • Four Rivers Institute Guide Certification

Group and Community Service Skills: Group skills and dynamics are fostered through community service participation. (Both to the community of the school and the community at large.)  Students participate in a weekly experience guiding a diverse array of people in diverse environments.

Students take an active role in assisting with the development of programs to meet the needs of Tribal, low income and under privileged communities.
